Raza joined Chambers following his call to the Mauritian Bar in January 2021. His areas of practice include civil, commercial, public and administrative and employment law, as well as international arbitration.
Raza appears before all courts in Mauritius, including the Supreme Court, international arbitral tribunals and has appeared before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Raza’s experience include assisting with the following significant cases:
Dayal v. Jugnauth [2023] UKPC 35 (Privy Council) and Dayal v. Jugnauth [2022] SCJ 279 (Supreme Court of Mauritius) - acting for the Electoral Supervisory Commission in the electoral petition seeking to invalidate the election of the sitting Prime Minister of Mauritius on the grounds of electoral bribery and treating.
Emtel v. Mauritius Telecom & ors [2024] UKPC 9 (Privy Council) - acting for Emtel in one of the largest claim for damages under Article 1382 of the Mauritian Code Civil (MUR 1 billion) for unfair competition and failed telecommunications regulation. Emtel's appeal to the Judicial Committee was allowed against the regulator and the operators
Mauritian company v. French national (confidential PCA arbitration): acted as junior counsel (led by Ali Adamjee) defending a French national in a multi-million dollar international arbitration for claims for breach of a collaboration agreement and breach of confidence claims. Successfully reduced the damages claim by 95%.
Mauritian company v. Zambian company (confidential MIAC arbitration - ongoing): junior counsel (led by Ali Adamjee) defending a Zambian company in a multi-million-dollar arbitration for claims for breach of a management services agreement.
Sinohydro Corporation v. The Minister of Finance & Ors (ongoing) - Acting for an international engineering and construction company in judicial review proceedings before the Supreme Court of Mauritius in a challenge against decisions of the Minister of Finance and of the Public Procurement Office of Mauritius in relation to debarment proceedings.
EDUCATION
Raza obtained his Bachelor of Arts at Williams College, Massachusetts, majoring in both Biology and Economics. He embarked on an accelerated LLB at Queen Mary University, London, graduating with a first-class degree. He then completed his Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) at BPP, London. He was called to Bar of England and Wales at the Honourable Society of Middle Temple in 2019. Raza undertook pupillage at Chambers under the supervision of Anwar Moollan SC and at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
